Embeded between the foothhills of the Bavarian Forest and the Danube valley, there is the Markt Metten immediately next to the district town Deggendorf. Our abbey was founded in 766. Apart from clearing work in the bavarian border area, there was soon the task of education and lesson. The seminar for boy singers, which had existed before the secularism (1803), developped after the rebuilding of our monastery by King Louis I in 1830 to a grammar school with boarding school, which still keeps and continues the rich benedictine traditions of our house today.

The St.-Michaels-Gymnasium is a small school with personal atmosphere. It has got a humanistic and a modern-language branch and can be attended by every boy and girl who fulfills the common conditions for a grammar-school. A wide range of optional subjects and predilection groups, contacts to schools in Great Britain, France and the Czech Republic, regular concerts, theatrical performances and sports events enrich our everyday school-life.
